Mobile gaming is the future of gaming. It’s by far the most prolific and intuitive gaming platform available. Despite its potential, mobile gaming is often misused by developers. But it doesn’t have to be. Below is a brief list of some of my most favorite mobile games. These are going to be less well known offerings that I feel highlight the strengths of the platform.
Each of the titles links to the android page for the games. There are probably iOS version of each game as well. I’m sure you can find them on your own.
Easy to learn, hard to master, the ideal puzzle game. In Drop7 you drop numbered disks onto the field. When a disk is in a row or column with the same number of disks as is written on that piece, it disappears. It’s a simple system that allows for a wide variety of board states. It’s an extremely addictive game, and my go to when sitting around without anything to do.
The current ruler of brick breaker games. I wrote about it already here. A great expansion on an already engaging genre. That said, while its base mechanics are much better than others in the genre, it doesn’t have the same lasting power. My hope is that this game will inspire further iteration on the concept.
Takes solitaire, and adds a roguelike twist. I’ve previously written about it here. Card games work especially well with the touch screen interface of mobile device. But many competitive card games don’t work as well in the stop-and-go environments that I prefer to play phone games. Being a solitaire game makes this one much easier to pick up and play in short bursts.
There’s a lot of picross games out there, but this one is my favorite. It has a clean interface, and very few animations. I also like that it has multiple colors. To be honest, there may be better versions out there, but there are just too many for me to hit up each one. Let me know if you find one you prefer.
Those are my picks. As you can see I really like turn based, puzzley games, that are easy to pick up and play for short bursts. One genre I feel will be really strong on mobile is strategy games. At some point I’d like to explore them and see whats out there. Let me know in the comments if you’ve found any hidden gem mobile games.
